I survived week 1 thanks to my crock pot and an understanding life partner. Dallas & Melissa promise that things will get better in week 2:
Most people report that their “carb flu” symptoms are gone by the very end of the send week… once your metabolism has become “fat adapted,” you’ll notice that your energy levels are much more stable than they ever were with processed foods and an incessant influx of sugar.
However, although you are starting to feel better, the healing process takes much longer than a week or two.
This sounds about right for 2 reasons: 1) my joints are still hurting (the primary reason I’m doing this) and 2) every time I’ve tried to cut added sugar and carbs I haven’t made it past week 2. I’m committed to this, so I’m going to do it. No takey-backy.
Three things I learned Week 1 on Whole30:
1: I ACTUALLY LIKE COOKING! Oh, miracle of miracles!
I never thought I’d say it. All my foodie friends are going to lose it when they hear that one. If you’ve ever come over to my house to cook for me (you know who you are) I owe you a meal. Promise.
2: Planning meals makes it a ton easier to stay on track.
This is one of those bits of advice you hear over and over but until you actually do it you don’t understand. By planning everything I’m going to eat 3 or 4 days in advance I’m able to ensure I don’t over-eat; but more important for me right now is I know I’ll have ENOUGH. I keep under-eating and then am starving long before I’m supposed to be. Fortunately I got this handy planning pad from KNOCK KNOCK over the summer (convinced I would use it the moment I got home and then didn’t for months).
It’s been helpful this week – last week I ran out of dinner options on my heavy-client days and had to go buy food. Less than ideal. And, for the first time I can recall, I got a RECIPE from a MAGAZINE! Fortunately, I had my little pad to write it on so I’d remember where to look when the time came.
3: Carrots are more than just orange!
Did you know this!? Is this a thing that people know!? At the farmers market I saw bright red, green, and even a white breed from Pakistan. This whopper ended up in beef stew on Sunday night – delicious.
