Two things have inspired today’s little nugget: I’ve recently become a fan of George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series (AKA Game of Thrones), and over the weekend I took on the Tri-State Super Spartan Race. While on my 3rd trip back up the mountain, after flipping a tire but before the class four scramble, a quote from the first book in the series came to mind:
Bran thought about it. ‘Can a man still be brave if he’s afraid?’
‘That is the only time a man can be brave,’ his father told him.
-George R.R. Martin A Game of Thrones
Great line from the book; but not the best on a jpg. So I boiled it down to this:
If it doesn’t scare the shit out of you then there’s nothing to be brave about, right? What does trying the things you already know you can achieve really teach you about yourself? I am a firm believer that the things that scare us most are the things that can teach us… and I’m not just talking about cliff jumping! That person you’re mildly afraid of at work? They have to breathe to live, just like you. That in-law that intimidates the crap out of you? Ask yourself why and try to break it down. The dance class that you’re embarrassed to try may be the funnest thing you’ve ever done. You’ll never know till you try; so be brave my friend. Go out and do something you never thought you would or could.
Every Wednesday I share quotes, ideas, and thoughts to help inspire, drive, and provoke reflection. Check out past Wisdom Wednesday posts, share your thoughts in the comments, and feel free to share some of what inspires you for future posting.
