Something New #57 – Swizz and Cheese Fondue

The food-related hits keep coming from last week; and I promise that soon I’ll write about something not related to what’s going on my mouth… BUT, Saturday night the in-laws were in town to celebrate the 75th birthday of our matriarch Johanna.  Family traveled from near and far; but train, bus, and even car; to join us in Gotham.  The plan was to eat at a Swiss restaurant in the theatre district.  Yes, you heard me: a Swiss restaurant.  ‘What do they have at a Swiss restaurant?’ you might ask.  Well, you might want to look at the menu.

Swizz

WINE CAVE!

Wine Cave

The place is Swizz  (they’re on 53rd between 8th & 9th if you’re interested) and they boast, among other things, a wine cave!  Pictured to the right, we were fortuitous enough to get to dine in said wine cave… with 18 people it was a little tight, but some sacrifices must be made for the sake of being fancy!

Hot Cheese ~ For Dipping

For some reason my in-laws found it very strange that:

1) I’ve never had fondue

2) We didn’t receive a fondue pot as a wedding present (which I think I may expect one for either our anniversary or next Christmas… hmm….)

Obviously, this serious transgression against cheese needed to be rectified.  Good thing for me I hadn’t yet committed to giving it up after reading Skinny Bitch.

While I don’t have a good picture of it I can confirm that it was both cheesy and delicious.  My section of the table opted to have the “Traditional”

Gruyere and Emmenthal cheeses, served with cubed bread

Not my typical cheeses, to be sure… but I’m not complaining either.  Fortunately, we also followed up our large dinner with cake and, you guessed it, chocolate fondue.  I’m proud to say I did dip my chocolate cake with chocolate frosting into the dark chocolate fondue and I was in no way disappointed by this choice!
