Something New vacation week: ALL FOOD!
Well, not the whole week since Monday was the Making Mayon video; but most of the week. While I have been doing more than just eating and cooking and going out, they’re mostly things I do to relax so they aren’t “new” necessarily.
Something New #52 – Rollin’
Tuesday I went for sushi, but wouldn’t be satisfied with the same ole thing (even if I was at my regular haunt Izumi). Tuesday’s weapons of choice: The Rock ‘n Roll and the Danny Roll.
Both delicious I might add.
I have yet to be disappointed by something that Izumi has put in front of me. Though I’m a fan of a well created simple roll both of these were excellent.
If you’re ever looking for good sushi in the upper 20s, Izumi is your jam!
Something New #53 – Fried Banana
Wednesday night we opted for a new(er) Thai place down in Brooklyn and ended up at Mai Thai. Reviews were mixed, and we weren’t 100% sure when we started out that it wasn’t a takeout place. Turns out it’s kinda both. There’s a big takeout counter by the door, and past it a dining room. The way the waitress acted kind of felt like the takeout experience in-person. She didn’t want to get the full order, but when we interrupted her she took it and got it right. She brought the check and we had to ask for desert… you know, that kind of thing.
While everything the hubster ordered was tasty I’m sorry to say my side of the table left something to be desired. I tried a new curry, but was really disappointed, so decided ‘what the hell’ and went for desert as my Something New. Fried banana:
I wish I could say this was as good as it looks… but it wasn’t. The filling was flavorless (and I ❤ bananas) and the crust soggy. I’d say if you go there stick with Pad Thai and sticky rice, when they did a great job on.
To cheer up after such a snotty Something New:
After dinner we went for a walk in the park and stumbled upon this. Enjoy:
Something New #54 – “BLT” Dumplings
On Thursday, after a day of frolic in the glorious sunshine we wandered over to Columbus Ave to see what we could see and found our way into Columbus Tavern. The hostess was stressed, the owner seemed prone to hovering, and the waitress friendly (if inattentive). I loved the atmosphere and the menu was just what we were looking for; so when I saw “BLT” Dumplings on the menu with no detailed description I couldn’t resist. I figured, if they don’t go on to say what it is then it’s exactly what it sounds like, right? Wrong:
On the menu they’d put quotes around the “BLT” portion of the title for a reason. They were good, and that mustard is the bomb; but weird is definitely the word for them.
Something New #55 – Cracking an Egg One-Handed
Finally, this morning while making french toast I realized I needed a few more eggs and ran down to the corner store. We always buy organic eggs, which are brown because they haven’t been bleached and processed to give that nice white-ness. The thing about those organic brown eggs? They’re hard to crack with one hand because the shells are thicker. The bodega in my neighborhood (after we overcame a little language gap) only had white eggs. Score! Chance to try it.
I ended up getting goop on my hand and a little shell in the bowl; but on the second try I succeeded! The trick? A good solid whack and even pressure on either end of the shell… I guess.
